Before exercising or performing an athletic event the “core” should be engaged or “woke up” if you will. This allows for better recruitment and activation during more complex athletic movements. One way this can easily be done is to perform the cross crawl exercise.
Start on hands and knees. Raise your knees off the ground so you are on hands and toes. From this position “step forward” with your left hand and right knee (but don’t let your knee touch the ground), return to start position and then do the same with the other side. Alternate and repeat on each side 10-15 times. Be sure the back stays completely straight and the trunk is level with the floor through out the whole exercise.
